Komaki is raised in a working class family in Tokyo. She left her husband who are useless Noritomo and takes her daughter Nonchan back to the home that her mother raised her when she was a child. Not wanting to burden her mother to support her, she looks for a job but there is little opportunity for employment as she is without qualifications and no work experience. She worked part time and she encounters her senior in high school Tateo. Unknowingly Komaki have developed a passion for Tateo who takes her to a small tavern called "Totoya". There she tastes the mackerel in miso and are astonished by the texture and the aroma. She has the brilliant idea of making the ultimate cheap and tasty box lunch shop.
